Current land use in Monteverde has lost many farms; therefore our goal is to keep this important and essential aspect as well as tradition through our cabins. When you stay in our cabins, besides being our special guests you also become part of the farm.
Our family
This farm has been in the family since 1954.
For nearly seventy years the farm was exclusively dedicated to dairy farming.
Our father and grandfather have always worked aside with all kinds of vegetable gardens which are an essential part and tradition within Costa Rican farm life.
As the family grew in number and age, the new generations got involved in jobs and activities outside of the farm.
However the love and connection of farm life was inevitable therefore a family business was started, Cabinas Capulin.
Like any other family business, the growth and learning process has been slow but steady- challenges are faced with optimism and support.
How so? By experiencing farm life. Our trails and tours lead you to our small cow barn, our current gardens and a small hydroponic garden, besides our coffee and sugar cane plantations.
Cabinas Capulin
If you are looking for a peaceful and beautiful setting in the Monteverde region in which to relax, immerse yourself in nature, watch spectacular sunsets, enjoy the fresh mountain air, walk through beautiful cloud forests, and experience life on a small family-run farm, Cabinas Capulin and Farm is the place for you.
Located just outside of the town of Santa Elena, Cabinas Capulin and Farm offers 9 beautiful wooden cabins on a family-run farm, surrounded by spectacular cloud forest, beautiful gardens, coffee fields and views of the Nicoya gulf. All cabins have private bathrooms, comfortable beds, wi-fi, and terraces or balconies for birdwatching and relaxing. Some cabins also have kitchens for those interested in cooking their own meals.
All cabins have access to a private and secluded trail through the Cloud Forest that you can explore at your own leisure. Birdwatchers and nature-lovers will be thrilled by the gorgeous, dense cloud forest that is home to towering strangler fig trees, emerald toucans, motmots, quetzals, bellbirds, hummingbirds, agoutis, coatis, armadillos, grey foxes, two-toed sloths and many other animals. Families will enjoy having forest trails, gardens and fields where their children can play and explore. And everyone will enjoy lounging in hammocks, drinking a good cup of coffee, and watching the glorious sunsets over the Nicoya gulf.
In addition to being a tranquil place to relax and soak up nature, our cabins make a great base for exploring the Monteverde region. The cabins are close to all of the tourist attractions in Monteverde (~3 km) and Santa Elena (< 1km), yet are away from the noise and crowds.
Our friendly staff can help you organize tours, transportation and guides to the nearby cloud forest reserves, ziplines, hanging bridges, horseback riding, waterfalls, coffee tours, and other attractions. If you are interested in birdwatching and nature, we highly recommend you go on a tour with Jose Manuel Torres Leitón, an accredited naturalist who lives on the farm who can lead nature walks or early-morning birdwatching tours on the farm or at nearby reserves. We also offer delicious home-cooked breakfasts, with coffee and fresh vegetables harvested directly from our farm, for a small price.
Our cabins also offer a unique opportunity to experience life on a local family-run farm. The farm has been in our family since 1954, and is the current home of 2 grandparents, their 5 children and 9 grandchildren, all of whom are committed to sustainably managing the farm and conserving the forest.
For those interested in learning more about small-scale farming and campesino life, we offer a daily hands-on farm tour in which you can feed chickens, harvest eggs, pick fruits and vegetables, milk cows, taste freshly squeezed sugarcane juice, learn about coffee and milk production, and meet the family.
The tour ends with a sampling of local traditional Costa Rican foods and coffee home-grown on the farm. This unique, personalized experience will likely be a highlight of your time in Monteverde, providing you with an inside look at life in rural Costa Rica and giving you an opportunity to taste home-grown and home-cooked Costa Rican food.
Whether you are interested in relaxing in a peaceful mountain setting, watching birds and wildlife, experiencing life on a small Costa Rican farm, supporting local family-run businesses, or simply having a beautiful base for exploring the Monteverde region, please consider staying with us. We will do everything possible to make sure you have an enjoyable and memorable stay.
